New Orleans' Drainage and Levee Systems and Lessons From Katrina

In this half day traveling workshop, Andrea Bourgeois-Calvin (Lake Pontchartrain Basin Foundation) and Robert Traver (Villanova University) will lead a tour of the Greater New Orleans area, focusing on the history and function of the unique drainage and levee systems and lessons learned from Hurricane Katrina. The workshop will include visits to levees surrounding the city, including the Mississippi River and Lake Pontchartrain, seeing what is being done to improve hurricane protection. Participants will also tour a pumping station, discussing the unique way New Orleans handles stormwater. Finally, the tour will drive through areas of the city impacted by Hurricane Katrina, including the "Ninth Ward," the site of Brad Pitt's "Make It Right" neighborhood.
